Laser therapy, also known as photobiomodulation therapy (PBM), uses carefully controlled wavelengths of light to support the body’s natural healing processes.
The light is delivered directly to the treatment area and absorbed by cells within the tissues. This can influence cellular activity, support energy production and help create an environment that encourages repair and recovery.
Unlike surgical lasers, therapeutic Class 3B laser treatment produces very little heat. It is non-invasive, painless and usually well tolerated by both dogs and horses.
Laser therapy may be used as part of a wider physiotherapy and rehabilitation programme to:
Cells use energy called ATP to carry out normal functions, including repair. Photobiomodulation may support cellular energy production and influence biological processes involved in tissue healing, circulation and pain modulation.
Different wavelengths of light interact with tissues in different ways:
Red light is absorbed more superficially and may be particularly useful when treating wounds and tissues closer to the skin.
Infrared light can penetrate further into the tissues and may be selected when treating muscles, joints and deeper areas of discomfort.
The wavelength, dose, treatment time and probe are carefully selected according to your animal’s condition and the area being treated.
